So far there are two farms that will be hosting a day at the farm to experience the digging up of the biodynamic preparations.

Please mark your calendars – the Society’s 2012 Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, March 31stat the Durham Town Hall, 185 George St. W., Durham, Ontario, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. We will hold our business meeting in the morning. The afternoon will include sharing what we know about biodynamics, a presentation on “New Adult Learning” by Arlene Thorne, and then some participatory exploration of how we may use it in broadening knowledge of biodynamics.

Lunch and snacks will be catered by Megan Cookson, the chef at Chicory Common in Durham. If you`ve eaten at Chicory Common you`ll know how good Megan`s cooking is! She is happy to use ingredients donated by Society members in her lunch preparation (which will also help to offset the catering costs). If you have any of the following that you would like to donate for the lunch, please contact Heather Thoma (705-368-0460 or membership@biodynamics.on.ca) as early as you can (and March 15th at the latest):

carrots – 8 lbs

onions (cooking) – 15 lbs

garlic bulbs – 15-20

potatoes – 16 lbs

cabbages – 3 heads (large)

celery – 2 heads

summer sausage – 1 log

We will have the traditional potluck dessert as well.

Costs to attend the AGM are: business meeting is free to all; lunch and afternoon program is $20; and afternoon program only (without lunch) is $10. A separate AGM announcement will also follow in early March.

Demeter Hay for sale!

Southbrook vineyards has Demeter certified hay for sale. This cut is in 50 lb square bales but we can also cut round bales at a later date. The hay is a mix of clover, timothy and other grasses with a small percentage of alfalfa.

Cow Share College registration information

After Michael Schmidt’s acquittal on all charges relating to his cowshare operation earlier this year, he responded to the intense interest from producers with the first Canadian Cowshare College in May.

Positive feedback and increased interest means we will be offering another Cowshare College Basics Workshop on Saturday, October 23^rd from 9 am to 4:30 pm in Durham, ON. Michael will lead the workshop and topics to be covered include the biology, safe production and handling of raw milk; the legal framework currently required for a cowshare program; and developing, maintaining and managing cowshare member relationships.

We will also be following up with those who completed the May workshop. Cowshare College – Level II is a half-day workshop, from 9 am to 1 pm, that is the final step in the credentialling process for producers who wish to be on Cow Share Canada’s referral list, the first steps being the completion of the Basics workshop and the second being the successful inspection by an independent inspector. At this session, more advanced material will be presented, and participants will have an opportunity to bring specific challenges and questions for discussion.

Please indicate which workshop you are interested in. (Note: the Level II workshop is limited to those who have already completed the basic workshop).

The workshop fee for Cowshare College Basics is $295 and includes: a full day of instruction; tour of a raw milk dairy operation; lunch and refreshments; and copies of raw Milk Production Handbook by Tim Wightman, The Untold Story of Milk by Ron Schmid and Safe Handling: Consumers’Guide to Fresh, Whole, Unprocessed Milk by Peggy Beals.
